Denton Town 1 Rochdalians 0 Rhodes Cup Final - Men

Here is the report from John Howard - secretary of the Lancs and Cheshire AFL.

DENTON Town crowned their best season for nearly 50 years by winning the league’s Rhodes Cup in a hard-fought final with Rochdalians at Curzon Ashton.
Town who last won the premier division title as Bradford Parish back in 1961 had wrapped up the league championship some weeks ago and preserved a great unbeaten record in the campaign – a very rare feat for the league.
Their last win in the Rhodes Cup was some 25 years ago and Rochdalians pressed them all the way with both sides missing chances before the vital breakthrough came on 75 minutes.
A quickly-taken free kick by the Town keeper Peter Berry eluded the determined Rochdalians defence allowing ace goal poacher Rick Cartner to scramble the ball home from close range.
Both sides had chances in the closing stages but good goalkeeping at either end kept the 1-0 scoreline intact to set up great celebrations for the Town supporters.
Town chairman Geoff Gable was part of the team which last won the championship and he said: “This double win is the result of a great deal of hard work which has been put in at the club by players and officials and it was great to see some our old players from 40 years ago there to see the club achieve such great results.”
Pic the Town team and officials celebrate their success.

Thornton Cleveleys Tournament 12/5 - 13's

Well girls, that a long long day, meeting at 7am and by the time I dropped everyone off, and got the van back to Les' it was 7pm. I was well shattered - God knows how Phil felt, he had to go to work in the evening.

On the way down, with torrential rain and blowing a gale, I thought this is going to awful, soaking wet all day, cold, blown all over the place, but thankfully, it eased off, we got some sunshine, and all in all, it turned out to be a half decent day. Bit of a strange place for a football club with that stream running through it - I thought a tad dangerous in places, especially with little kids.

Anyway, to the tournament. I deliberately booked this event, because it was the only local 11 a-side one I could find, and I knew it would be packed with good teams - all from the Lancs League. First up was City, who we deservedly despatched 1-0 thanks to Nat's goal, and despite being a blue, that was really SWEET! City finished 5th in the league, and aren't a bad side. Next up Bolton Wanderers, runners' up in the league, gave us the run around, and to be honest, we could of lost by 4 never mind 2 - we played them onside so many times, and didn't deserve anything out of the game. Last group game was against Euxton (pronounced EXton by the way), who we brushed aside 2-0 with goals from Loz and Yoyo. This meant we were through to the Semi-final of the main competition vs. Preston North End - league champs and undefeated for over a year. We had chances at 0-0, and if we had scored, the result could of been different. However, a dubious goal in the 1st half gave PNE the lead. Possible offside as a PNE player was in Chloe W's line of site, and the ball flew into the top corner. Good goal, which stood, as the ref thought the PNE player wasn't interferring with play, and therefore, not offside. We went at them 2nd half, but were undone by a good cross and header giving Chloe no chance, and that was that.

All in all, good performance vs. quality opposition, with us playing 11 a-side for the 1st time. Clearly, work to do if you want to match Bolton and PNE, but we're not that far behind, and I'm optimistic we can continue to improve, and give them much more of a game next time we meet.

Big thanks to Les for providing the van and the gazeebo, Phil for his coaching skills, parents for their support, and most of all, the players for entertaining us. I'll leave you with the comments of Chloe Williams, whoose example I hope players and supporters alike will follow, by sending me comments and words of support, to be posted on the blogger.

Nigel.

Hia Denton jus sayin dat the tournament went well even though we didnt win but oh well not to worry we all played really well nd we had no way of coming back from 2 -0 nywayz Bye xxxx Clowii xxxx

And last but not least - a message from Phil.

Hi Girls I would like to give you a BIG Thank You for all your hard workyesterday at Thornton Cleveleys, you played really well and made it a very enjoyable tournament. Phil

Urmston Meadowside Tournament - 12/5 (10's & 12's)

first off well done to the u10s for winning their tournament, what a great first season. keep it up every one at denton town are really proud of everyone of you.
Well u12s we didnt win but coming 3rd with only 6 players is pretty darn good to me. it must have been exhausting for you also SORRY for telling you that you couldnt go in the area which lead to us losing the first game against fletcher moss(who got knocked out in the quarters) it was hard to lose to curzon ashton in the semis (especially after we beat them twice in the league) but they have really improved as a team this season and i think we under-estimated them. We then played Urmston in a playoff for the plate trophy which was 0-0 after extra time. Well once it went to penalties there was only going to be one winner. With Beth in net we couldnt lose and true to form she saved three of the six penalties with us scoring five. i know people might say im biased (but im not honest) Beth was outstanding in net today (and all season) when called on (there were a couple of games she didnt get to touch the ball) and made some superb saves. Danny scored all our goals in the group stage and then Keely scored a cracking goal and Becks got one as well. So WELL DONE and lets hope at the next one we can win the final (City won it again).
Thanks to all the parents who take the time to come and support us over the season and id like to thank the girls and to say that its a pleasure to take you all to tournaments because you are all very well behaved and always (well nearly) do as you are told.
Finally well done to the u13s for reaching the semis in their tournament although i believe you were robbed because the ref was biased.
DAWN.

Can I just add, well done to both teams for representing the club so well in this tournament. Sorry I couldn't be there, but I was with the 13's at Thornton Cleveleys.

UNDER 11's - I know you haven't been in a tournament yet, and I'm sorry for that, its just that they have clashed with other events that I've been involved with. I promise, you will play in a couple of tournaments this summer.

Men at the Double

I went to watch the men complete the double last night, vs. Rochdalians at The Tameside Stadium. In what was a bruising encounter, our determination paid off late on in the 2nd half, when Rick lobbed the keeper and followed the ball into the net. We were all biting our nails near the end, as the ref Pete Darby played 5 mins of added time, but it was well worth the wait, as naturally everyone was jumping about and screaming with delight at the final whistle.

Congratulations to Mark, Coddy and all the lads, for a great victory, and tremendous season. That brings our trophy haul this season to 7 plus 3 runners' up, which are as follows: -

Women - League (just 1 defeat) and Cup Double
Men - League (no defeats) and Cup Double
13 Girls - League (just 1 defeat, and 1 draw)
10 Girls - Cup and TC Trophy - also League runners' up
12 Girls - League runners' up and cup finalists.

Fantastic season for the club.

Denton Mens Final

Hi Girls,

As you should know by reading the Blog, our Men's team have won the league for the 1st time in 40 years. Next Weds 9th May, they have a great chance of doing the double, which will be fantastic.
The club NEEDS your support, to cheer them on against Rochdalians in the Rhodes Cup Final. Now I know, its Utd vs. Chelsea, and if you've got tickets I understand you want to be there, but if you haven't, come along, give us your support, you can always watch the highlights later.

The match is at The Tameside Stadium, (home of Curzon Ashton), kick off 7pm. Admission is £2 per adult, with kids and pensioners free. Also, possibility of free transport from the Broomstairs pub in Denton, though we obviously need to know you are coming to reserve your place.

COME ON DENTON!

Nigel.

Droylsden 0 Denton Town 7 (u11's) Friendly

Well done Girls, very comfortable victory, and although you slipped back into some bad habits, you did enough, and never looked in too much danger.

No Captain Tiarna, Georgia or keeper Lachen, so we had to juggle things round a bit. Hannah did some brave saves in net, Prossy great finishing with FIVE goals, and good work between Kylie and Emily, who both scored one each. Megan great at clearing the ball, though needs to work on using laces instead of her toe. Kelsie battled hard, as did Monique (sorry Pinky).

Big big thanks to the 13's girls that played, with Sam and Chelsea sharing an half each for Droylsden, and Nicole playing for Denton.

Nothing else planned at the moment (though Im working on it), so see you all at training on Thursday.

Georgia's broken ankle

On her way back to the car last night, Georgia fell over a stone on the car park, and was rushed to Casualty by her parents. After spending several hours there, it appears Georgia has broken hr ankle, and may have to have a cast on for six weeks.

Hard luck Georgia, that was really tough luck, but hey, thanks for waiting until the season was over, unlike the girl up the road who got injured just into the new season - not mentioning any names - LOL.

Take it easy, see you real soon!

Urmston Meadowside 2 Denton Town 5 (u13's)

Well another season been and gone - how time flys. Last night it was a sod getting to Urmston with the M60 snarled up, resulting in 3 players (Sally, Chloe W and Kay), arriving 20mins late. The ref was really pushing for kick off, but they arrived with seconds to spare. Nobody's fault, but because of this the match was shortened to 30mins each way.
Fantastic sportsmanship from Dave and the Urmstom girls, shouting hip hip horay before the game, in tribute to us winning the title. Never seen that before, and I thought it was pretty special - so thanks Urmston.
Great start with Nat scoring after about 30 secs, but after that we seemed to stall a bit, until Sam bagged another after 14 mins. Felt we needed the two goals early in the 2nd half, as we were starting to give Chloe (Urmston) too much space, allowing her to run at you, which is what she does best, and eventually it paid off for them, with her scoring two fine goals. However, the game was lost for them by this time. Considering she was not well, she play some terrific football, and is a class player, who I believe is going to Man. United next season.
Sam's brace moved her into 3rd on the goalscorers charts, and Georgia could perhaps have caught late on if she'd been greedy, but give her credit, she did the right thing, and played the ball to Sam, putting team before herself. Nat finished 2nd, one short of Yoyo (who was missing for the 2nd game running due to illness). Lauren also bagged her 5th of the season. But as Nat keeps saying, its not about who scores the most, as everyone contributes - there is no I in TEAM. Well done, Nat, that is a great attitude to have.
Our player of the match was Nat, and for them, despite Chloe's performance, went to Darcie, who also got it off us when we played at ours. Ref didn't have a great game, missed a few offsides, couple of clear back passes, so gave him 7/10.
1 min 1-0 Nat
14 mins 2-0 Sam
Half time
35 mins 3-0 Sam
37 mins 4-0 Nat
44 mins 5-0 Loz
50 mins 5-1 Chloe for Urmston
54 mins 5-2 Chloe again.
Now you're C*H*A*M*P*I*O*N*S, you will have to work really hard next year to defend your title - everyone will be out to beat you.
